Best Police Officer Resignation Letter Sample (+ Free Template Download) [2022]
A police resignation letter isn’t too dissimilar from a traditional resignation letter. The author should speak with their department head, deputy chief, or police chief in advance of writing the resignation letter. In this meeting, the police officer and police chief should speak about the desire to resign from law enforcement duties.
When the police chief and the officer speak about the resignation, the police officer needs to have a positive reason for resigning. This could be any number of reasons. Some include:
- Being part of a violent crime and desiring to resign.
- Being part of protests that turned violent and desiring to resign.
- Being a victim of police brutality and desiring to resign.
- Desiring to resign for personal reasons.
When a police officer resigns from the police force, a new officer will be assigned to replace the deputy. A two-week notice should be given to the city and the chief of police. The police department will replace the officer’s job duties and job functions with another colleague or a new trainee that is completing their law enforcement training program.

Dear Chief Doe —
With a heavy heart, I must resign from my position as a police officer and law enforcement officer two weeks from today's date. Unfortunately, the recent increase in crime has led me to make a difficult decision for my family. I’ve been a physical victim of a few criminal acts, and I’ve decided it’s time to pursue a new career.
I’m here to help assist in training a new trainee. Or to assist in transitioning all of my hours to another officer who is willing to take over my shifts. It has been an honor to work alongside officers like yourself. And I will be missing the 1st Precinct every day of my life.
I wish everyone at the Millopis State Police Department a safe and happy journey moving forward.
Sincerely,
John
